Care and Maintenance

A kitchen should be a source of lasting joy for all homeowners. Townhouse Kitchens wants clients' kitchens to stay in great shape for many years to come. Here are some general rules of thumb to use when caring for your new kitchen.

Kitchen Cabinetry

We recommend that your cabinets be dusted periodically with a damp cloth to remove any dust and dirt. Using a dry cloth may result in scratches to the finish. An abrasive cloth or cleaner should never be used.

Never spray or apply any cleaning product directly to the surface of your cabinetry. We recommend removing grease and build up with a mild dish detergent solution diluted in water. As cleaning products are often re-formulated and changing there is not a product that we recommend. When cleaning, always wipe the damp cloth in the direction of any wood grain. Silicone-based or wax-based cleaners should not be used on your wood grain cabinetry. Never spray your high gloss finish cabinets with any glass cleaner as over time the finish will be degraded by the strong cleaning agents in glass cleaners.

If at some point your cabinetry becomes nicked and dented and you wish to have your cabinetry touched up, we can recommend a quality touch-up company that you can engage directly.

Countertops

Whether man-made or natural, avoid abrasive cleaning pads or cleaners.

Man-made countertops require almost no maintenance and can be cleaned with any regular dish detergent in water. For particularly challenging stains, the occasional use of Soft Scrub with bleach on a soft sponge will remove almost all stains. Soft Scrub should not be used on a frequent basis and should be tested in a less visible area before using it on a stain.

Marble or natural stone countertops require a natural stone cleaner diluted in water and applied with a damp soft cloth. Natural stone cleaners do a great job of removing any scaling build-ups which diminish the beauty of the stone. Scaling is a natural process that occurs with most natural stone. For deeper cleaning and stain treatments, we recommend that you hire a professional stone refinisher to come in and resurface your countertops on a periodic basis. The frequency of resurfacing will depend on the stone and how much you use your kitchen. We can recommend experienced stone resurfacing companies to treat your countertops.

Stainless Steel Appliances

Most major manufacturers of appliances sell stainless steel cleaning product to be used with their appliances. We recommend that you buy the cleaner from the manufacturer of the appliance on their website.
